Mission

The Hunterdon County YMCA is committed to helping people grow in spirit, mind, and body.  We are a community service organization founded upon Christian values, which today embraces all faiths, serving individuals regardless of age, race or economic means.  The YMCA is guided by our core principles of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

History

YMCA programs were first run in Hunterdon County in 1903.  As with many YMCA's at the time activities included inspirational meetings and retreats.  The YMCA was able to use facilities at the Taylor Wharton building in High Bridge for many programs in the 1910's and 20's including the first basketball court in the northern part of the county and space for Camp Taylor, a summer camp program for boys.

In the 1920's & 30's more programs were added, including expanding Camp Taylor to accomodate girls weeks.  The first lifeguarding class in the county was held by the YMCA at Lake Solitude.  Hunterdon County YMCA was one of the founding groups to participate in the new YMCA Youth and Government program when it was founded in the late 1930's. 

Two programs that continue to this day were begun in the 1940's.  Hunterdon County YMCA began Day Camp programs in 1946 in Clinton, Whitehouse and Oldwick and the Indian Guides (now Adventure Guides) program began in 1947.

In the 1950's there was growth in all program areas including sports programs, day camps, clubs and parent-child programs.  All programs were held in the community; in private homes, churches, schools and businesses.  1950 also saw the first introduction of women on the Board of Directors, 4 women were brought in at once.

In 1967, Hunterdon County YMCA aquired it's first piece of property.  The land which became YMCA Camp Carr was donated by the Carr family and the program continues to this day.  The camp was literally carved out of the forest by the work of dozens of local volunteers.

In 1971, the Reigel paper company gave control of it's recreation center to Hunterdon County YMCA and the Reigel Ridge branch in Milford was open until 1994.  Also during the 1970's Camp Carr improvements continued with the addition of a pool, and our Clinton Pre-School began operation.

The 1980's saw the opening of the Deer Path Branch on land purchased from the Hunterdon County Park System, and by the end of the decade, plans were already made for the 1991 expansion.  The first Before and After School programs were begun in the Flemington-Raritan and Readington districts, there are now 18 sites.

The 1990's and early 2000's have seen continued growth of programs to meet the expanding needs of the community.  More before and after school program sites were added as well as South Hunterdon Day Camp (1997) and Sports Camp at Deer Path (2000).  In 1999 the YMCA Child Learning Center opened and in 2000 the Round Valley Branch soon followed.  In 2001, the YMCA merged with the North Hunterdon Senior Center.
